The word Dosimetry might be a new word or a new subject for everyone. However, dosimetry is one of the most important aspects in medical physics and health physics. Dosimetry by definition is the measurement of the doses in tissue and matter from radioactivity or ionizing radiation. Radiation monitoring is very important due to the fact mandate employers should provide protection and other forms of monitoring in order to assure that the occupational doses are as low as its achievable reason. Also, every employee that has been monitored and have received five hundred mrem in a span of one year should be given a badge.

The beneficiaries of radiation monitoring are the employees themselves. Every monitored employee is automatically a beneficiary in order for them to work with ease and with peace of mind knowing that their health has not been a problem. The company owner is also a beneficiary as the monitoring of occupational dose provide efficient protection against the existing or even the upcoming health claims of an employee. It is also important that records should be kept in order to prolong the lifetime of the business. It is more than the regulation of meetings that a regular worker of an establishment should be provided with a radiation dosimeter individually and personally. This really helps the employer have peace of mind, knowing that their employee’s health is not at risk. Knowing also that the employee’s exposure to radiation has been monitored constantly with a legit dosimeter, it can greatly reduce their feeling of anxiety.  

However, what is a dosimetry badge? This badge usually comes with a strap made with plastic and a metal clip so you can attach it to your clothing. It should be positioned properly between the waist and the collar. There is also an existing practice that a dosimetry badge should be positioned at the part of its highest dose. This means that it should be in the exterior part of a protective gear, and should be placed closest to the source of radiation. However, if you are wearing a thyroid collar or an apron, there is a probability that you will be checked with a special dosimetry calculation which most likely reduces your radiation count due to the use of a protected gear.  

Lastly, there is also what is called as a control badge. These are used to control energies that are non-occupational in which an employee’s dosimetry badge has been exposed to. This is because a dosimetry badge can still be exposed with radiation that is outside the workplace. This needs to be controlled in order to accurately identify the amount of radiation taken inside the workplace. A worker’s dosimetry badge should always be kept alongside a control badge. However, it is not always applicable espeacially when the dosimetry badge is worn or the person is in a place wherein there are no radioactive sources. Indeed, dosimetry is one important aspect in keeping track with radiation contact that can be a risk to a person’s health.
